Tinka is a great model and a remarkable human being. I met Tinka the same way I meet most of my models – through an online casting. We talked about wardrobe and ideas for the shoot. At the time, I was fortunate to have access to a student Studio at UBC. I wanted to start our shoot with simple editorial shots, but then, ultimately, to progress to fantasy like setups. Tinka was the perfect model for this plan. I have to admit, that initially what drew me to pick Tinka as a model was her flaming red hair. It made such a statement! But, as is often the case with my models, Tinka won me over with her life story.
Tinka came to Canada from Croatia just months prior to our shoot. She was 26 years old and world was her oyster. Prior to Canada she had a stint in the US. When I met her, Tinka had already made connections in the Vancouver Film community and was going to work at the upcoming Vancouver Film Festival. She subsequently went on to work in the film industry and to have a variety of colorful experiences.

I kept meeting Tinka throughout the following year. This girl is like sunshine, a truly remarkable human being! Having come from Croatia with no money, no connections, not much of anything really, Tinka quickly navigated the Vancouver film industry and made literally hundreds of friends. The last time I bumped into Tinka on the street, she informed me that she is going to Burning Man as a part of a troop! She also attended countless festivals throughout the summer.

I subsequently found out that Tinka went to South America for the winter. She is a truly remarkable girl in being able to just make things happen. After the shoot with her, I pondered for a long time if I should be taking more risks. It is remarkable to see someone as free as Tinka to literally take over the world, while the rest of us are working the 9am to 5pm grind and save for retirement. To me Tinka has continued to be an inspiration and I follow her remarkable journey through facebook.
In Costa Rica!
Now, let me tell you a bit about our shoot. We were shooting at the UBC Studio. Makeup and hair was done by wonderful Momo Liu. I’ve worked with Momo on a couple of shoots and she is extremely friendly and creative.
Once we started shooting the results were truly fantastic. This is one of my all time favorite profile photos. I love how well the color of the flowers works with Tinka’s hair!
We then ventured outside. Momo helped me with the lights. They kept falling over because of the wind! I love how the tree provided the perfect backdrop for this portrait.
As is often the case, my best ideas usually come to me towards the end of a shoot. I saw little while flowers and something told me that we have to make use of them. I asked Tinka to lay down on the ground. Momo was helping by holding the light. At first it was difficult to get anything decent, but Tinka persevered, made an effort to hold her head above the grass to avoid distortion and as a result we ended up with this amazing portrait! This is one of my all time favorite photos because of how unusual it it. I love the background, pose and lighting.
It was a wrap with Tinka and Momo, but I continue to think about what Tinka said during our shoot. I’ve since told many people about this remarkable girl. She is a continued source of inspiration and I wish her the very best.
